“What do you mean?” she asked me.

“I mean Amanda Fox, the girl they keep talking about in assemblies. The one who’s in hospital. She’s there because the spirit took her soul.”

Cassy didn’t reply for a moment. “Jonny, do you know how crazy you sound right now?”

“Please, Cassy,” I said. “You have to believe me. Have I ever lied about anything before? Have I ever come across as mad to you?”

“No,” she said. “Look, if you believe in what you are telling me, then I trust you. But how do you know all of this? How do you know that the spirit took them?”

“From my dreams,” I said.

“From your dreams?”

“Okay. Maybe I need to explain a little more.”

I told her all about my dreams, and then the second time I had visited the crypt after the dream about the boy. I told her about Aaron, how he had helped me, and how I had been to his house. How he was a medium. How I had been talking to him a lot and that’s where I had been over the past week.

In fact, I told her everything apart from the fact that I was a medium too.

“So what do you think?” I asked once I had finished. The sun had now dropped behind the trees, casting twilight upon the duck pond.

I noticed Cassy shiver a little.

“I don’t know what to make of it all,” she said. “Be honest with me, Jonny. Do you really think that spirit took Amanda’s soul to Limbo, or whatever it’s called?”

“Yes, truly.” I had explained the concept of Limbo to Cassy, and she said that she understood.

“Then I believe you,” she said.

The words danced in my ears. “Really?” I said.

“Yes.”

I felt like punching the air, but instead, I merely nodded. Although I hadn’t told Cassy that I was a medium today, I would tell her sometime soon. I knew that there was now a small possibility that she would be okay with what I was.

“I’m glad,” I said.

“But one thing I still don’t understand is, why is the spirit taking these souls? What is its reason?”

“I’ll be honest, we still don’t know. We’ve searched records, the internet, local libraries, for who this spirit might be, and what happened to them, but we have nothing to go on. In fact, that sort of brings me onto the last thing I wanted to talk to you about.”

“What is that?” she asked.

“Well, don’t get too creeped out, but Aaron wants to do a séance to try and connect to the spirit.”

Cassy’s eyes glazed. “Isn’t that where everyone sits in a big circle and tries to use that board?”

I nodded. “Yeah. It’s called a Ouija board, but Aaron doesn’t want to use one of those. He reckons that if he connects to the spirit, then its voice will come out of his own mouth.”

I felt Cassy shiver, even though she wasn’t touching me. “What? That’s really creepy. I’ve got to ask Jonny, why do you trust this person so much? You’ve only known him for a few days, and yet you are treating everything he says like it’s law.
